Why spend money with your commercial landscape maintenance company for watering and maintaining a lawn when you can install appealing verdant landscaping. Not only are drought tolerant plants more affordable to maintain, but they continue to provide colorful flowers and foliage throughout the year, and can be installed to take the place of high maintenance lawn.

Our Landscape Management Services Use Drought Tolerant Plants

Mediterranean plants like rosemary, olive trees, sage and succulents are becoming increasingly popular used by our landscape management services, but they’re slightly more challenging to grow in the shade since they need a good amount of sun during the day time, and suffer if the soil is too moist. If you’re growing these types of plants, either provide the right growing conditions, or grow specimens that are more conducive to the shady areas.

The easiest drought tolerant landscaping for commercial landscaping is, Salvia, Flax and Rhaphiolepis, since they don’t require as much water and care as a traditional lawn. Oenthera is a good one to start with, especially if you want lots of flowers with the drought tolerance, grow in an area that can be confined since it’s too invasive to grow outdoors in the ground.

Succulents like echeveria, senecio, aloe and sedum are also worth trying outdoors in containers or in containers for added interest and to replace traditional flowers.

Sun Light and Plant Placement

The south or west facing side of your property is the ideal place to grow drought tolerant plants, since they’ll receive lots of full sun all day. Place them in an area that gets at least  six hours of sun per day, and avoid places that get to shady, such as near a tree or the shady north side of a wall.

If you don’t have an area that gets full sun or enough light, don’t worry. Use specimens that thrive in part sun areas.

Part sun areas also make it possible to grow landscaping in areas that are in part shade exposure, such as under a tree or on the north side wall of your property. There are many plant choices for these types of exposures that can be planted in containers, in wall-mounted vertical spaces or with there are a variety of kits that have recently become available thanks to vertical landscaping’s recent popularity. With the right setup, you can enjoy a green wall of colorful landscaping.

Plant Material in HOA Landscaping

In an hoa landscaping setting or even commercial office properties, you only need four things to grow plants: A healthy plant, good soil with fast drainage, fresh soil amendment and a sunny location.

The plant material should be disease free and healthy in appearance pest free. When procuring the plant material, your commercial landscaping company must, carefully remove the plant out of its pot to ensure the roots are firm and healthy.

Decorative Containers for Plant Material

You can use many types of containers for succulents and drought resistant plants, from decorative stone planters to terra cotta pots. It is important that they have fast draining soil with a hole for water to drain so water can exit the pot without causing rot or fungus to develop. If your container doesn’t already have a drainage port, consider drilling a small hole.

A basic potting mix will work for most succulents and drought resistant plants, though you can boost drainage by adding perlite or succulent soil mix for Mediterranean plants like salvia and rosemary.

Irrigation and Water Management

If you’re planning to conserve water, install a low volume drip system so that the potting mix won’t wash out of the container. Otherwise, water slowly with a water wand connected to your garden hose.Since the main reason of killing plants (or any exterior landscaping plant, for that matter) is overwatering, keep the soil amply moist, and ensure that the container has excellent drainage so the water can escape to avoid rotting the roots.

Pest & Disease Control

Some of the challenges we see in bay area landscaping include aphids and fungus gnats are the most common pest, but since they feed on decaying roots, they’re usually a result of a plant’s death. Either cut your irrigation watering, or shut the water off for a period of a few days in order to bring it back to life.

Landscape Maintenance

If you’re having your landscaping maintained by a bay area landscaping company, then there’s no need to worry about pruning lanky growth. However, if you’ve been relying on staff in house, consider hiring a commercial landscaping company that has the staff and expertise to keep your plants thriving.

With some succulent plants you can easily propagate most stems that root can be transplanted to a pot of fresh soil and grown into a new plant to replace struggling ones or relocate to other areas in your landscape. If your plants seem less vigorous after a period of time, incorporate a time-release plant food to the soil mix.
