6 Factors to Help With Commercial Lawn Maintenance

As we get closer to the fall months, lawns may need some renovation, replaced or reseeded to help damages caused by the bay area drought conditions.Lawn renovation by means of sodding or seeding is an easy method for bay area landscape maintenance contractors to help put the green back in a stressed brown lawn.

Here are a few Quick tips for renovating drought stricken lawns.

• Timing is a key factor when renovating your lawn with commercial landscape maintenance. October-November is a great time to reseed because the soil temperature is warm enough to germinate the seed and temperatures mild enough to keep the top layer moist for germination.

1. • Get rid of the thick brown thatch. Using a power rake dethatcher, remove all old matting and dead grass or weeds before reseeding. If you have trouble spots, remove them or treat them before reseeding.

2. • Replenish the soil. Have the soil tested in a laboratory to determine if any nutrients are lacking in the soil and apply accordingly. Apply an appropriate amount of soil conditioner and amendments per analysis prior to the new seed / sod.

3. • Smooth the soils surface. Loosen the top layer of soil and smooth out the soil surfaces removing small rocks, roots and debris for good soil contact. Core Aerate or detach the lawn to help ensure good water and oxygen uptake.

4. • Select the appropriate type of water effcient lawn that will grow best in the bay area climate, depending on the city and micro-climate, lighting, prevailing shade, and lawn use. Choose a high-quality seed that has a low inert and weed percentage to ensure that weeds will not compete and interfere with the new germination.

5. • Apply the new seed appropriately following the manufacturers recommendations. Pre mixing the seed with slurry of starter fertilizer and water will help with a faster germination.

6. • Keep the top layer of soil moist during germination. During the few weeks, water generously, and then adjust the watering schedule to a normal cycle after seeds germinate.
