5 TOP Corporate and Commercial Landscaping Tips

A lot can change in the commercial landscape over the next 50 years, such as availability of water, environmental-global climate change, the economy and the list goes on without saying that proper maintenance is the key to a long life span. Read on for our top 5 Landscape Maintenance Tips that can extend the life of your landscape into the next 5 decades.

TIP #1 Conserving Water with a Rain Sensor

It’s great that we have been getting some winter rainfall but we are not out of the drought yet. Installing a rains sensor on your irrigation system will pay you dividends compared to the high cost of water and will help to reduce your watering footprint by shutting off the watering system during wet rainy weather, this is a must for water conservation and has proven to save money.

TIP #2 Manage Water Flow-

With the wet weather upon us, it’s imperative to keep the drainage system flowing in the right direction to avoid erosion problems, storm water control and flooding just to name a few. Maintenance personnel should make sure that all storm inlets and storm water catch basins are clear and free of landscaping debris to keep the water flowing appropriately.

TIP #3 Stop Mowing Wet Grass-

With wet weather upon us, it’s important to allow your lawns to dry out between mowing, if a lawn is saturated with water it’s probably best that the mowing be delayed until it is dry and firm to walk on. Mowing wet saturated grass with heavy mowers is bad for your soil, it creates soil compaction depleting oxygen levels in the soil which is essential for healthy root development and will lead to other problems like water runoff and anaerobic soil conditions. Lawn mowers rut and damage the look of your lawn creating a muddy mess that will have to be repaired by seed or sod. Time is better spent on other landscaping tasks like hard pruning shrubbery for size control for visibility and clearance, cleaning debris in the landscape beds and detailing the flower beds at the entrances to your property just to name a few.

TIP #4 Bay Area Tree Pruning-

Winter is the best time to get your commercial tree pruning done. Your trees are dormant in the colder winter months and are less likely to go into shock caused by large branch or limb removal that could otherwise damage your tree if done in the warm summer months. Diseases are less prevalent in the winter and are less likely to translocate in the spring when the weather is damp and warm.

TIP #5 Adjust Watering Schedules to Reduce, Conserve and Save-

With extended cool nights and limited daylight hours you’re trees, lawns, plants and flowers need limited amounts of water in the winter months, especially with recent rainfall. Watering plants and trees should be delayed taking advantage of the opportunity to conserve water keeping them healthy and robust for this spring. Another way to help automate this process is to install a smart irrigation controller, smart controllers adjust watering schedules daily and have been known to help reduce your watering footprint by 25%-50% depending on the weather and other important factors.
