Trees have a life span, some living longer than others. That might somewhat irrational, but dead trees on commercial properties are more common than one might think. Weekly landscape crews may not see or address these problems in their weekly site visits for a variety of reasons. The real question is: How can you tell if a tree is declining on your commercial property?

Here are some clues

Commercial tree care is a service that FloraTerra offers and we understand tree care, there are various symptoms and clues to look for when a tree is going into a state of decline and this is the very reason we have put together a list of clues to keep you apprised on your trees. Usually when a tree is dying or declining, there may be several reasons for this and it will not come back without some professional attention by a certified arborist. The longer you delay things, the more chance you have in losing your trees.

Disfigured Bark

Small cracks along the trunk line is usually not a good sign when it comes to the health and vitality of your tree Severe mechanical damage to the trunk line of a tree can also have a severe negative impact on your trees ability to transport nutrients and water when damaged. It’s common for an older tree to lose some of its bark as part of the aging process and a healthy tree will eventually renew itself over time. If new bark does not emerge, this is a sign that you have some problems with your tree.

Sparse Branching Structure and Thinning Canopy

How does the interior branching pattern look in your tree? With evergreen trees, a true warning signal is if the interior branches are sparse and thin, this is usually an obvious sign that the tree may be in a state of decline. Also remember that dead leaves that cling to branches are clear indicators that the branch structure is probably dead and should be removed, healthy trees drop their leaves in winter months. And dead branches that are flagging to one side of the tree is usually a sign that there may be some trunk or root damage to the tree.

Damaged Roots

Since roots go deep beyond the soils surface, your commercial landscaping service should determine root problems below the surface can be difficult. Recent construction projects, soil excavation for a driveway or foundation, a shallow root system, exposure to heavy equipment can have adverse effects on the soils compaction depleting oxygen levels in the soil. One obvious sign of root damage is a tree that is leaning to one side. Another sign to consider is small sprouts emerging at the base of the tree trunk. This type of growth is known as epicormic shoots and these visual signs are indicators that the tree is under stress.

Fungus

Small mushrooms – attached in clusters at the base of the tree (aka wood conchs) – on the trunk line or branching structure of a tree is indicating that your tree is experiencing fungal rot and anything beyond the decay beneath the fungal bodies may be dead or dying.

Construction Damage

With commercial construction development, a number of trees located in and around the construction zone may not have been removed, some of the remaining trees may have potentially experienced a significant increase in their solar exposure to wind, sun and heat exposure, which can cause a tree to decline. Heavy construction equipment like tractors and trucks can also damage the soil by creating less oxygen and other limiting factors that are relative to a trees health.

Commercial Property Tree Care

Dead trees can impact the visual appearance of a commercial property, but problems from dead and declining trees on your commercial property should not be ignored. Here are a few things to consider when reviewing your trees.

  •          Dead or dying trees attract pests
  •          Dead branches are unsafe and can cause serious property damage or injury.
  •          Infectious disease can translocate to other trees on your property.
  •          Declining, trees are targets of pedestrians, vehicles, parking lots and building structures.
