The cooler bay area temperatures, stormy winds and frost make it an especially challenging season for your trees.  Although deciduous trees are dormant during this period, exposure to the cold winter weather can trigger stress on shrubs and trees alike.

Winter is almost here and it comes with a price tag

Consider taking these early precautions with a commercial tree service and planning bay area tree pruning for the months ahead, proper care will help mitigate the stress on your trees.

Mulching
Apply a 2’ layer of mulch within the drip line of your tree, the mulch will protect your trees roots proving a protective insulation against frigid temperatures and suppress water loss. Be careful not to apply thick layers or piles of mulch against the tree trunk or stem of plant.

Irrigation Management
the winter winds have a tendency to dry out the soil, and the lack of water can create stressful drought-like conditions for your shrubs, plants and trees.  If the ground lightly freezes, the tree roots may not be able to absorb moisture and may further desiccate the plant material. Keeping your trees and shrubs periodically hydrated through the remaining winter months is important for their long term health and vitality.

Pruning Care
winter is actually one of the best times of the year for pruning your trees, and it’s because the structure of the tree is much more visible. However, limit your pruning by removing only dead wood and poorly developed branches in order to preserve the structural integrity of your tree. Pruning during dormancy can also be a natural source of disease prevention by helping to suppress the spreading of active bacteria and harmful disease pathogens.

Tree Trunk Protection
for young frost sensitive trees, you can help mitigate damage to your trees and shrubs by wrapping their trunks with a protective geo-textile material. Soft-barked trees can be susceptible to frost damage and damaged by destructive hungry wildlife.  Regardless, if you choose to use black polyethylene or burlap material, the protective wrap will suppress frost damage on the trunk and creates a natural protective barrier from animals and harsh weather conditions.

Winter can be a challenging period for your trees and shrubs. However, with pro-active planning and care, your trees will be able to withstand the cold winter months ahead and ready for a successful come back next spring.
