## Caring For Your Trees

Trees are an important in many ways, they provide aesthetic value, shade for people, cool down buildings and provide cool shade in hot parking lots. Studies have shown that they can also increase business traffic in shopping centers and boost retention levels in multi-building communities. Please read on for simple steps that will keep your trees thriving for years to come.

**The Depth Has Influence**

In commercial property landscaping, planting trees at improper soil depths can have numerous, long-term side effects that are challenging to correct. Prevent them by understanding how tree roots function and planting at the appropriate depth.

**Getting to The Root of the Matter**

For trees to grow healthy and vibrant, a commercial landscaping services should always consider adequate levels of water, nutrients and soil temperature. The truth of the matter, tree roots grow in a shallow natural environment. When a tree is planted deep, it depletes the soils oxygen levels. Trees will slowly die and decline over time, exposing them to potential problems like stress, root fungal problems, pests and disease, in drought and wet weather, or even killing the tree in a short period of time. In fact, most tree problems are attributed to the soil.

**If it goes Deeper, and beyond it’s not better**

In a perfect scenario, plant trees so their root collar (where the trunk starts to flare out at the base) is slightly raised above the soils surface. To identify a tree that is planted incorrectly, look for a tree trunk that grows straight from the ground like a pencil or telephone pole. Obvious clues trees that are declining because of this as a result of planting a tree or plant deeper than it should be, include limited surface roots; discolored leaves that are turning yellow, sparse foliage; and stunted growth.
