How to Hire an ISA Certified Arborist Like a Pro

Posted by Elizabeth Mendoza on Nov 17, 2014 7:00:00 AM

Many property managers and building owners have heard the term “Certified Arborist” or understand what separates Certified Arborists from " Professional Landscape Companies ".

Certified Arborists have received their accredited experience and certification from the International Society of Arboriculture. Any landscape company can tell you they’re an Arborist, but there’s no way of knowing their level of expertise without checking on it first. Unqualified “landscapers” are the ones that say they can do it all !

Why Should I Hire a Certified Arborist ?

The following information has been obtained from the International Society of Arboriculture’s website: An arborist, by definition, is an individual trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining individual trees. Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care.

Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well-cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.

Many "profesional landscape companies" claim they provide full service landscaping including tree care. Be aware that many landscape companies hire subcontractors to perform there tree work and mark up there subcontractors price by 25-25% at your expense. Although you may be receiving the convenience of consolidating to one vendor, the cost may be significantly more than hiring a company that has there own in house tree care profesionals.

Certified Arborists and commercial tree care company(s) are individuals who have achieved a level of knowledge in the art and science of tree care through experience and by passing a comprehensive examination developed by some of the nation’s leading experts on tree care. Certified Arborists must also continue their education to maintain their certification and adhere to a Code of Ethics. Therefore, they are more likely to be up to date on the latest techniques in arboriculture.

Becoming an ISA Certified Arborist is a voluntary process through which individuals can measure their knowledge and competence required to provide proper tree care. ISA Certification is not government-sponsored or government-endorsed; it is administered by the International Society of Arboriculture as a way for tree care professionals to demonstrate their commitment to the profession and the industry.

Certification and Knowledge

Certification is not a measure of standards of practice. Certification can attest to the tree knowledge of an individual but cannot guarantee or ensure quality performance. The Certified Arborist Exam is a 10 Part Test that includes the following main subjects: 1. Soil Management 2. Tree ID/Selection 3. Installation & Establishment 4. Safe Work Practices 5. Tree Biology 6. Pruning 7. Diagnosis & Treatment 8. Urban Forestry 9. Protection & Preservation 10. Tree Risk Management

The applicant must have a minimum of 3 years full time experience in Arboriculture to apply for taking the test, achieve a minimum of 72% on the test, and maintain 30 Continuing Education Units every 3 years to retain certification. When searching for a tree care professional, be sure to ask for an ISA Certified Arborist.
