12 Tree Choices for Drought Tolerant Landscaping

We’ve told you about trees that are more trouble than they’re worth. So, we’d be sorry if we didn’t share some of our ideas for low-maintenance celebrities that will super charge your properties curb appeal. Times are much different than they were 15 years ago, back then client were interested in lots of greenery and color with a much less emphasis on water conservation. While there are some that haven’t changed their ways, professional landscapers are resorting to water efficient landscaping as a way to curb maintenance and water costs.

Unfortunately California and the Bay area are the driest on record and some are convinced that the climate change is here to stay, causing drier and hotter conditions like never before. It’s obvious that water conservation should be high on everyone’s priority list.

Keeping the drought in our minds eye, we have assembled some of our top choices for water-effcient trees for public space landscaping and the San Francisco Bay area. Like all trees, drought-tolerant trees need the right conditions to grow and become properly established. By their species, these water-wise trees are low-maintenance. Just remember their mature size when planting to avoid high maintenance pruning.

You’ll also find a list of great resources on drought-tolerant landscapes in the East Bay Municipal publication called Plants and Landscapes for Summer Dry Climates of the San Francisco Bay Region. So be sure to check that out.

Why should your landscape maintenance contractor be selective about the type of tree? Some trees are survivors of the drought, they love the heat, and some have prolific blooms throughout the growing season.
